The concept of home cinema

The term "home theater" refers to the ability to recreate the sound of a movie theatre at home, as faithfully as possible.

Doing so requires the following:

  • An audio or video system with multichannel audio
  • Devices called multichannel amplifiers, for reproducing spatial sound (3D audio) by using multiple speakers.



However, there are many standards for defining how many speakers and which audio format to use:

  • Dolby Surround
  • Dolby Surround Pro Logic
  • Dolby Pro-Logic IIx
  • Dolby Digital
  • Dolby Digital EX (THX EX)
  • DTS
